A consideration of rural art practices and cultural imagination in a rural context. Gaining Ground, the latest phase in Clare County Council’s public art programme 2017-2020, culminates in a daylong symposium, where artist practitioners and curators examine how place, and creating work with the ‘local’ as a starting point, can provide a platform for highly innovative and challenging work.
Gaining Ground presents multiple visions of the rural and taps into the rich vein of stimuli artists are exploring, while working in a rural context.
Artists, activists and poets include Sarah Clancy, Lisa Fingleton, Tom Flannagan, Godknows Jonas, Sean Lynch, Mary McAuliffe, Siobhan Mulcahy, Pauline O Connell and more….

Programme Extract:
Lisa is an artist, filmmaker, writer and grower. Her book The Local Food Project explores the power of growing and eating local organic food in the context of climate change and biodiversity loss. Incorporating drawings, photography and text, the book is filled with ideas and actions for people who think global and want to act local. Lisa believes that radical, creative and transformational change is needed and that the role of artists is critical at this time.
